Cyclosporin has been used topically on occasion in treatment of severe dry eye for several years now, particularly as a way of reducing surface inflammation. It has recently reached the mainstream by being made the active ingredient of a prescription eyedrop, Restasis.
Cyclosporin can also be used systemically, but has several side effects associated with it.
