The mucin layer of the tear film plays a critical role in healthy tears and a healthy ocular surface, therefore there is considerable interest in the goblet cells which produce it. In many patients with dry eye, it has been shown that goblet cells are less dense. Goblet cell density is also one measure of the efficacy of dry eye treatments.
