It is common for patients to not know the difference between the two types of what we think of us "eye doctors": optometrists and ophthalmologists.
Optometrists complete a bachelor's degree followed by an optometry degree program, but not medical school. Optometrists prescribe glasses/contacts, manage low vision problems, and diagnose, treat, and manage eye diseases and disorders. They do not perform invasive eye surgeries.
